Man, getting this finished has taken forever, but the results are worth it...
ANGEL COP is an insane mixture of Scanners, Robocop, Dirty Harry and Bon Jovi music videos, all brought to the OVA circut by maverick screenwriter Shou AIKAWA (Urotsukidoji, Genocyber, Fullmetal Alchemist) and Itano ICHIROU (Megazone 23, Gantz, Battle Royal High School). Cut by the BBFC for scenes of excessive mutilation, re-written script so as to not offend Western sensibilities, and the final three episodes held back by Japanese distributor JHV for three long years, Angel Cop has quite the a bizarre and controversial history indeed.
Initially released on a PAL sourced DVD by Manga Entertainment, which featured visible ghosting and clumsily edited in English titles, not to mention a subtitle track that used the re-written dub script when things got a little too political for their own good, the disc is simply a wreck. This edition was created by combining the R2 single DVDs (thanks again, Kemushi!) with the Manga DVD subtitles, plus translations of my own accord and other third party sources to smooth over some rough bits. These subtitles are a labor of love, and I'm sure any fan of action packed anime will love them, too.
Angel Cop is one of the most offensive titles out there; scenes of mutilation, torture, racism and asinine political propaganda are pretty much what the show thrives on. Still, in the way that RAMBO is hilariously disgusting "Go America!" stupidity, Angel Cop is a sardonic and gruesome commentary on the Japanese legal system and its' place in the world's economy, so if you don't take it totally seriously it winds up being a totally unique and amazing blend of over the top politics and mayhem.
For the record, I don't endorse prejudice, but I don't endorse censorship either, and so I offer this restored and unedited 3 DVD set to let viewers enjoy Itano's OVAs as they were written. This is a series for adults, and if they can handle the graphic violence I don't think cartoonish political satire should be much harder to swallow.
Original R2 cover scans and the manga adaptation by Taku KITAZAKI are included as well.
