Dear Vivid,
Please learn the difference between pigtails and twintails.

There is no real difference. Pigtails can be braided, but they don't have to be. Please refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigtail.

Twintail is wasei-eigo, so it's not really an English term. It can be used if there's no alternative or the term is of particular significance, (like in that entire LN about twintails) but pigtails is just as correct.

Pigtails is specifically used for braided hair almost everywhere you go. Twintails is a term everyone is familiar with and would have been perfectly applicable here. It also created a disconnect when you actually hear Kazama say twintails and yet you decided to use pigtails for the translation, apparently because you want to be special snowflakes for the sake of being different.

Wasei-eigo is best avoided when there's a direct English equivalent, and the hairstyle in question is generally referred to as pigtails or bunches by native speakers. Looking up "twintail" on the English-language Wikipedia will direct you to a page about aircraft design with a disambiguation directing visitors to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunches, where it is noted that the term is specific to Japanese.

There are many Japanese words that don't sound like what they mean in English. We don't write "mansion" when the characters mean "apartment" or "jersey" when the characters mean "tracksuit", and the same applies here.

Nobody is trying to be different here because all available subs translated that line the same way. You're free to demux and edit the script if it bothers you.

>There are many Japanese words that don't sound like what they mean in English.
This isn't one of those cases though.

>Wasei-eigo is best avoided when there's a direct English equivalent
It's indirect at best considering of the confusion regarding your usage of pigtails here since it doesn't concretely refer to one specific hairstyle.

If you think twintails is really such an obscure wasei-eigo term that non-Japanese won't understand it, I have to ask: who exactly do you think your target audience is?

People who aren't petty enough to argue to the death over the way one term was translated.

Either approach is justifiable, but when in doubt, I tend to stick to what an average English speaker would use unless there's a particular reason not to (such as the theme of the show or the nature of the character).

Can you please check your Japanese privilege, Onanim? I find it highly offensive.

Iae: Yes, thank you for your ever helpful and insightful comment in repeating what he already said. Your contribution will be remembered fondly.

Xythar: I suppose that's fair enough, then.

Commie: Checked and banked.
